Do you need to know how to measure it for you or the horse? is it an English or Western saddle? well made English saddles will not have rivets in the pommel. Neither of the previous posters know how to measure either an English or Western Saddle. go to http://www.wikihow.com/Measure-a-Saddle
The pommel to the cantal. ( the middle front, to the middle back)
It is better to get someone, a professionally trained saddler to fit a saddle to your horse as each horse and rider are different and if you get it wrong - pressure points at certain places you can ruin a horse's back and cause antisocial behaviours such as bucking and rearing.
I disagree with your first poster, that is how to measure a WESTERN saddle. An ENGLISH saddle measures from the rivet on the side of the pommel to the middle of the cantle. The measurement in inches is the seat size.
Edit to add:
Well, Ron...she used the term ENGLISH in CAPITAL LETTERS in her question, so, silly me, I assumed she wanted to measure an ENGLISH saddle. Sorry about that. Most of our posters are asking about seat size, so I assumed that too. Let's see if it makes a donkey out of you or me?
Second LOL of the day, your own reference used the term "rivet" in describing how to measure seat size on an ENGLISH saddle, so I guess my reference to a rivet meets with your approval now? Actually, your own reference used almost the exact terms for measuring a western saddle and for measuring an english saddle as myself and the previous poster. So, pray tell, where were we wrong? The only difference I saw was the reference specifically to the stitching on the cantle for the western saddle measurement, rather than just cantle. AND you take "wiki anything" as a reliable reference? wow
Get up on the wrong side of the bed roll this morning? I actually hope she does follow your link, so that she can look at width for her horse also, since I do think we can all agree that is even more important.
Dude, look up Schleese Saddle Fitting on YouTube - there's a nine step process. It's really informative, and I literally just watched it last night - and took a page and a half of notes. It talks about fitting it to you and your horse, everything from wither clearance to billet placement. Love it.
